Te Reo funding needs to increase


DSC_0028_300x200One of the country’s top te reo Maori experts wants the Government to get more return for the money it spends on language initiatives.  Erima Henare, chairman of the Maori Language Commission, said if a stocktake was not done on the efficiency of the annual spending, the number of fluent speakers could decline.  Thirty-five years ago, when the seriousness of the language’s decline was first identified, there were 70,000 proficient speakers. Today there were just 18,000 and the “ironic and cruel twist” was that the language was probably more widely seen and heard now than ever before, Mr Henare said.
