Scholarships for Private Schools, close 14 Oct 2009
2 min readThe Government has announced a $2.6 million (GST excl) scholarship fund that will enable up to 250 students in Years 9 to 13 from low-income families to attend a private secondary school. The scholarship will pay the student’s private school fees each year, and will also contribute towards other school-related costs.
When the programme begins in 2010, 50 scholarships will be available in each of Years 9, 10 and 11. In 2011 and 2012, a further 50 scholarships will be available in Year 9.
Students are eligible if:
- They will be in year 9, 10 or 11 in 2010
- They or their primary carer(s) are not a beneficiary of a trust
- Their household annual income is $65,000 or less
- Their household net worth is $150,000 or less
A scholarship will cover up to $15,000 of the students private school fees per year while they attend that school. There is also an annual allowance of up to $1,500 available to cover costs such as the school uniform.
- Eligible applicants will be selected randomly in a ballot.
- There will be two ballots held: one closing 14 October 2009 and one closing 28 October 2009. A
- pplications must be received by either of these dates for selection.
- Applications received by 14 October 2009 will be placed in the second ballot if they are not drawn in the first round.
