The Dominion Post has reported that the Patea Maori Club is hoping to record a new record as a result of the “cash windfall” which as gusted in from the royalties of Poi E.

“The club from the Taranaki town says the cash will help young people to learn kapa haka and assist local marae. It may now look at recording some new songs.

Poi E is at No3 on the charts this week, up from No7 last week. The song, performed by the Patea Maori Club, spent 22 weeks in the charts in 1984, four of them at No1. Its resurgence comes on the back of its featuring in hit film Boy. Poi E was written by linguist Ngoi Pewhairangi with music by the late Dalvanius Prime. Royalties are split between the Prime family, Pewhairangi and the Patea Maori Club.

Club chairman John Nyman said Poi E’s rise up the charts was “a real buzz”. Its success had inspired the club of 80 members to look at recording some fresh material. “One of the big things is finding someone who can engineer it, and make that magic happen.”

The club earned about $6000 a year from the song after it featured on the Vodafone website.
