Respected Ngati Porou elder and historian, Dr Te Kapunga Matemoana Dewes, otherwise known as ‘Koro’, passed away this morning Tuesday 17 August 2010 at his sister Mereheni’s home in Te Araroa. He was 80yrs old. Koro was from Te Whanau a Rakairoa, Te Whanau a Hunaara, Te Whanau a Hinerupe, Te Whanau a Te Aopare, me Tuwhakairiora.

He will be reunited with those of his whanau who have gone before him – his wife Parekura Katarina Thelma Dewes (nee Raureti) from Ngati Rangitihi, Ngati Whakaue and Ngati Pikiao; his parents Te Aopare and Henry John Dewes and siblings John Henry, Samuel Hawkins, Arnold William, Whaimutu, Nepia and Lena Elizabeth..

He leaves behind his children, Cathy, Whaimutu and Campbell, their partners, children and mokopuna and his two sisters Mereheni Waitoa and Heni Torori Dewes-Porter.

Koro’s body has been taken to Evans Funeral Services in Gisborne and his cortegewill return to his sister Mereheni’s home for the night. In the morning he will be taken to Hinerupe Marae in Te Araroa for thetangi. His funeral service will be held on Friday 20 August at 11am and he will be laid to rest at Tangata Hapuku urupa in Horoera.
