The Te Hira Toi Ta Moko website has just been launched. Hira Young (Ngati Ruanui, Ngati Pikiao), based in Rotorua’s city centre, is an expert ta moko practitioner and also an experienced wood carver. He worked with Riki Manuel (Ngati Porou) a well-known master carver for several years at his gallery, Te Toi Mana Maori Gallery in Christchurch, New Zealand.

The site has a photo gallery and links to Hira’s Facebook Group.

During the 1990s Hiraworked on commissioned piecesfor private collectors and for Te Toi Mana Gallery. He has also worked on many carving projects in London and France and locally in Aotearoa.

In 1997, Hira decided to gethis peha (mid to lower body tattoo) but found it difficult to find a ta moko artist to complete the work. In the end he and several colleagues decided to hold their own hui (symposium) to invite other carvers who had made the transition from carving to moko to share their whaakaro (thoughts), matauranga (knowlege) and skills. Among them, were Derick Lardelli, Mark Kopua, and Gordon Toi. Sessions on needle making and machine use along with shading and lining were held.

In 2001, Hira took up the machine and how runs his own ta mokostudio and art gallery in Rotorua.
