From 1 February 2011 applications for two TeachNZ scholarships are open for people studying to become teachers.

These Scholarships cover a student’s core study fees and offer an allowance of $10,000 over the period of study. They are for people who will either begin their study for a teaching qualification at the start of the 2011 academic year, or who are part way through their study. To apply for a scholarship, they must be enrolled to study a teaching qualification with a tertiary organisation (provider).

Two different types of scholarship are available:

School Leaver and Undergraduate Scholarship

These scholarships focus on people who are proficient in te reo Maori, enjoy working with young people and show an understanding of the vital importance of education. They cover the following primary or secondary teaching qualifications:

  • Maori Medium – for speakers of te reo Maori who want to teach in te reo Maori at primary school level
  • Te Reo Maori – for speakers of te reo Maori who want to teach te reo Maori as a secondary school subject

Applications for these scholarships close on 1 March 2011.

Early Childhood Education Scholarship

These scholarships focus on people who have knowledge, understanding and experience working with Maori and/or Pasifika communities and want to teach in the early childhood sector (Early Childhood Education or ECE). These scholarships are available to students who are:

  • beginning or part way through their study for an ECE teaching qualification (ECE Undergraduate)
  • graduates in other areas who now wish to study for an ECE teaching qualification (ECE Graduate)

Applications for ECE scholarships close on 14 March 2011.

Graduate Diploma in teaching (Secondary) – Scholarships.

An application i have submitted to the University of Auckland is in a status pending, awaiting the last of my referee’s to submit their reports.
