His father was known by the name of Hapuku. Matt is a direct descendant of the Rangatira “Te Hapuku” and the Queen of Heretaunga “Te Heipora”. Their eldest son was Karanema.
Karanema was called Te Hapuku because he was the eldest son of Te Hapuku and Te Heipora. Karanema was sent by Te Hapuku, his father to represent him at a tangihanga in Wairoa. Karanema was infected by Measles while he was doing his fathers bidding and he was the first Maori from Heretaunga to die from this disease that nearly wiped Maori from the face of the earth.
During the tangihanga of Karanema, Te Hapuku was so overcome with grief at losing his heir, that he loved so very much it took days for him to finally attend. He reached down and picked his mokopuna Te Nahu up and took him to be raised by himself and Arihi the daughter of Karanema was raised by Hine paketia.
In the will of Te Hapuku the only grandchild he names in it is Te Nahu. Tamaiawhitia was the eldest son of Te Nahu and Mereana Kirini. Ivan otherwise known as Hapuku was the eldest son of Tamaiawhitia. Ivan was father of Matinee.
There has been trouble with the people of Havelock North not wanting a street named after the kuia “Te Heipora” and Jerry Hapuku fought for them to leave the Kuia name alone as the land Havelock North sits on belonged to her and she left it to her descendents. She was the Queen. Her whanau have a claim in for the land of Havelock North that was stolen from them.
This is just a part of the whakapapa of our rangatira Matinee, who has left us with much sorry in our hearts. He has left a hole that will not be filled.
Matt was part of the people still looking after the marae belonging to the rangatira “Te Hapuku”.
Ko Kahuranaki te maunga
Ko Poukawa te waiu
Ko Kahuranaki te Marae
Ko Te Hapuku te tangata.
Matt loved his whanau the people and the marae, with many others their aim is to bring about changes for the future of the people. His death is such a great loss to the people. Our hearts are fill with sadness and many eyes will fill to overflowing from all of our loss.
Moe mai te rangatira, haere ki te taha o nga tupuna haere, haere, haere
