2 min read
Poutiri Trust was established in 1997 by Te Whanau Poutirirangi Ora a Papa,a collective of kaumatua and kuiarepresenting Iwiin the Bay of Plenty.
Their role was to advocate Treaty relationships in health between the Crown and Iwi to improve the health status of Maori across the region. The strength of this foundation for Poutiri Trust lay is in its relationship with its matua base and the connections to the numerous Iwi Maori throughout the Bay of Plenty region.
Te Whanau Poutirirangi Ora a Papa created Poutiri Trust to umbrella and strengthen the Maori providers in the region. Today Poutiri Trust is a Maori Development Organisation that has a network of 18 health providers throughout Eastern, Western and Southern Bay of Plenty.

Our Philosophy |
Te Pae Mahutonga shows that in order for us to be successful health providers we must pay attention to contemporary Maori realities and traditional aspirations and assume greater autonomy and control in the delivery of health services.
Poutiri Trust exists so that whanau, hapu, and iwi affiliating to our four waka achieve whanau ora utilising the concept of Te Pae Mahutonga (M.H.Durie, (1999), Te Pae Mahutonga: A model for Maori Health Promotion).
Te Pae Mahutonga is a Maori health promotion model that puts emphasis on issues of particular importance to Maori Mauriora, Waiora, Taiora, Te Oranga, Nga Manukura and Te Mana Whakahaere.
