Iwi have pitched their intention to build social and affordable housing, but say it has to be an investment which provides good financial returns.
Ngati Whatua o Orakei of Auckland and Ngai Tahu of the South Island have spelled out their visions at a hui on the housing sector.
They also said they want to provide homes for everyone and not just Maori.
Council for Infrastructure Development chief executive Stephen Selwood says creating good communities was also part of the tribes’ message.
He says where there’s investment in state and social housing, there are positive social outcomes as well.
“This is more than just putting bricks and mortar down, this is about developing a community and building on the growth of the community as much as it is about investment.”
