Maori ward in Nelson might be set up

1 min read

By Tyler Adams A petition in Nelson which seeks to force a poll on whether a Maori ward should be set up, has gathered momentum.

Nelson City Council has moved to establish a Maori Ward and would be the first unitary council in the country to do so.

The decision has drawn widespread praise from many quarters but is also facing a challenge from a member of the legal fraternity.

Petition Organiser Kevin Gardener says around 1000 people have now signed the petition and he is fielding many inquiries.

He says his main reason for instigating the petition is council didn’t first consult the public.
