Review of the Regional Coastal Environment Plan and Variation to Proposed RegionalPolicy Statement

We are about to start:

  • A full review of the Regional Coastal Environment Plan 2003;
  • A variation to the coastal provisions of the proposed Regional Policy Statement (RPS).
  • This means if there are changes that you think should be made to our Regional Coastal Environment Plan (RCEP) or the coastal provisions in the proposed RPS, we need to hear from you. Unfortunately the timeframes are tight; all consultation needs to be complete in March 2012 and we acknowledge that we havent given you much time to have your say. With this in mind, we would like to make it as easy as possible for you to participate. There are a variety of ways you can do that such as:
  • Attending one of our workshops which will be advertised soon. We will email out the dates as soon as they have been confirme
    d.
  • Providing feedback either by letter, email or fax.
  • Making contact with Jo Noble, Cushla Loomb or one of our Maori Policy Advisors (contact details are at the end of this letter).

Regional Coastal Environment Plan review

The review will assess how effective the Regional Coastal Environment Plan has been and what changes are needed to give effect to national policies (such as the New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement 2010); reflect new legislation (such as Takutai Moana); and to ensure the Plan addresses the current issues facing the coastal environment in our region.

Review of the Regional Coastal Environment Plan

We expect to complete the review in May 2012. Once the review is completed we will consult with tangata whenua, stakeholders and the community to develop a new Regional Coastal Environment Plan and progress that through the statutory process.

Variation to Proposed Regional Policy Statement (RPS)

The New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement 2010 (NZCPS) was released after the proposed Regional Policy Statement (RPS). We need to make some changes to the proposed RPS using a variation, to ensure it is consistent with the NZCPS.

Consultation on the variation will take place from now until March 2012. We intend to publicly notify the Variation in May 2012.
