Kataore shines by bringing “something new” to the Te Arawa Regionals #kapahaka

1 min read

It has been incredible to witness the strength, skill and expertise of our Kapa Haka roopu at the recent Te Arawa regionals.

These committed groups spend countless hours “on the floor” rehearsing and perfecting each single movement so that what comes together on the day is seamless, so it was wonderful to read the whakaaro of Ricky Bishop on his experience at this year’s Regionals as part of Kataore, one of the 6 teams who made the grade on the day to represent at next year’s Kapa Haka Nationals, Te Matatini 2013.

Here is Ricky in his own words:

Regionals 2010, Kataore hit the stage confident that we were gonna make it in and was gutted we missed out, 2nd run after experiencing our first performance we decided to focus more on the competition.

Our aim this year was to redeem ourselves in every way, on and off stage, by bringing a new feel and tone to kapahaka. When we walked out on stage everyone expected the OLD kapa style but we wanted to surprise everyone by bringing something new and it worked…pheeeewwww!!

Te Matatini 2013 here we come. Kataore Ha!

Ka mau te wehi Ricky! Kapa Haka is a way of life here in Te Arawa country and this wonderful korero, shows how much energy is spent not just on the actual performance but on the vision and kaupapa that goes on behind the scenes.

Kia ora to Ricky Bishop for allowing us to reproduce his comments.
