Maori own water | Mana Movement

Moana Jackson made the simple statement that every tribe has a river said MANA leader Hone Harawira and that is why MANA supports Maori claims to the ownership of water and recognition of their right to have a primary say in its future management and care.

Government has been giving electricity companies the right to use water to generate power and local government has been granting water rights to farmers for a long time now said Harawira. They have assumed ownership of water all of this time, but now that theyre being challenged on it, theyre adopting a new line; that nobody owns the water.

“Maori ownership, control and use predates that of both central or local government, and that right must be confirmed before government takes any further action on its management or use.”

MANA President Annette Sykes states The government stole the rights to water through legislation. The way they got around using the word own was to replace it with the word control. If you control something, then by definition you own it. Maori never ceded their rights to water under the Treaty. Maori are right to claim ownership. This claim should come as nothing new to the public or to the government Maori have always maintained ownership over water and have struggled for years to have this right acknowledged.

Sykes continues People need to be aware that with global warming and growing populations across the world, water is fast becoming the new gold. Given our countrys dismal record of polluting our waterways, the public should support Maori claims over the ownership of water. Under Maori tikanga water is a precious resource that is to be preserved for the benefit of all. Not for those who can afford it.

  1. This is stupid. Nobody pays for the water itself ; what we pay for is the transport of water to homes and businesses. It’s a service that involves a cost, hence the user pays.

Maori claiming race-based ownership of fresh water, a life sustaining resource, is tantamount to a declaration of war on non-Maori. I wonder exactly what form Iwi want to ‘own’ water – what about water vapour?… What next, the O2 in Maori ‘airspace’??!!

  2. Kiaora I tautoko all the korero that have been voiced concerning our water rights as Maori. The same deal of free water for the whanau of Poroti – MEMBERS OF TE URIROROI – PARAWHAU – & – MAHUREHURE TRIBES.
Today thank GOD that propersition is still in place. Only heaven no’s how long that will last
Mon-key says noone own the water I have to ask why the water rate bill
why are we paying for water?
Whats the land rates for they definatley dont make any improvements to our land the roads are still cattle tracks so what the hek.
Nga Mihi to all the people maori and pakeha alike for the endless effort in getting the right information out to our people.

  3. why do we make gestures, as if this was a game & a funny one at that!!?? I don’t believe I would every joke about the future well-being of our motherland & everything pertaining to her the forest, rivers, the sea that surrounds her in all her glory, all living things that are apart of her & our lives as our tupuna, ancestors, forebears & founding father our whakapapa…..we all have the right to what I too now believe is a valid claim, the water is our life line, why is it when maori make a claim, we are belittled & made a mockery just for the mere thought…..you look at the ground & what do you see!!?? I see my mother, my brothers walks barefooted miri-miri te whenua, massaging our motherland, our mother provides a brook a branch from the river/iwi a hapu to quench his thrist……the river is a life force, theirs a river of life flowing within each & everyone of us……the same water we drink now is the same water prehistoric animals of our whenua drank from, prehistoric beings, our tupuna, ancestors, forebears & founding father also drank there of, the water is life itself, this is our given right as guardians of the land to luv, care & protect her at whatever cost, however it was never to be at the mere loss of life that was a crime……to claim back our very life force whom we whakapapa back to….is a valid claim.

  4. FOOD FOR THOUGHT; Musket & blankets as currency…..I’m sorry sick & tired of listening to this same old same ole conversation that our tipuna sold our land for peanuts because thats, the type of monkeys they would have us all thinking, correct me if I’m wrong.

I’m also tired of the mass of ignorant educated people who refuse nor chose to seek the truth, get to the bottom of, rather than join the mass who would have you believe only the ugly side of maori, & what they, maori believe, that an injustice had been placed upon them, a burden, a strangle hold, wanting justice for, & has never, not once been put right.

But the simple fact the ignorant majority would rather not deal with our grievences……I just wish people would share & care, question everything as to why our people continue to stand in protest, this is exactly what the NZC/NZA would have you forever be, ignorant of the facts, the truth & the CROWN, the so called do-gooders, what!! do they do?? Is it then true, they just sit & observe without a flinch, letting this NZ company/Assoication walk all over tangata whenua, selling up shares, before land claims are even doubt with first.

TIRITI O WAITANGI not all tribes sign it, My dads Nga Puhi whanau may have, but my mums Tuwharetoa whanau did’nt??!!

That which was written, only the CROWN could purchase & sell MAORI LAND….which to date the CROWN never once did……But the NEW ZEALAND COMPANY renamed

NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION WHO DID ALL THE SALE & CONFISCATING OF MAORI LAND, THE ONES WHOM HAD SET UP BASE IN BRITAN, THE ONES WHOM INITIATED THE START OF & SALE OF MAORI LAND TO FOREIGNORS, IT WAS THE FOREIGNORS WHO CAME HERE TO SETTLE ON THE LAND WHOM THOUGHT RIGHFULLY THEIRS VIA PRE-PURCHASE IN BRITAIN, THESE FOREIGNORS, WHERE YES & IT WAS RECORDED EVERYTHING WAS RECORDED….HAD GIFTED BLANKETS & MUSKETS TO THE NATIVES UPON ARRIVAL……NOT ALWAYS FOR THE SALE OF PURCHASE, AND IF SOME OF THESE ACTIVITIES DID TAKE PLACE WHICH NO DOUBT THIS CAME ABOUT, IT WAS ILLEGAL ACTIVITY, BECAUSE MAORI WHERE A COLLECTIVE IN REGARDS TO ALL FAMILY MATTER, AND EVERYONE MOVED TOGETHER AS ONE IN DECISION MAKING, NOT LIKE THOSE TRAITORS, LOWER RANKING, EVEN SLAVES, WHO SOLD THEIR TRIBAL LAND & RIGHTS WHICH WERE NOT THEIRS TO SALE YET RECEIVED FOR A MERE NODD, HANDSHAKE THE MUSKETS AND BLANKETS YOU ALSO INSIST AS A FAIR DEAL, DOES’NT MAKE RIGHT THE WRONG PEOPLE??!!

I mean how would anyone feel, if I was affiliated to this whanau, Rangatira merely because I was a slave, friend or of a lower ranking member of this household within the whanau, IWI….then a member of the NZC approached I, this individual & with benefits for this particular one individual I, he/she sold the whanau jewel, without asking, via a simple yes/nodd agree with, a mere handshake & receipt of goods, an offer, a sale, sold…..would you then still think its ok, if yes then be prepare to loose everything, because regardless, these very same COMPANIES/CORPORATES are buying up everything, which impacts us all as a NATION, which leaves us with the bills them the LANDLORDS & US THE TENANTS, because you were too ignorant to be bothered & to stand up for your own, your future……this is the future that is currently on offer to you ignorant ones, and I’m standing up for my future……SEEK AND YOU SHALL FIND…..

  5. Ownership of water reminds of the occupation of Waikaremoana by Tuhoe. I was honored to be among those who challenge the crown. It was my understanding that a deal was made with Tuhoe that free electricity would be made available to them in exchange for the use of its waters to generate electricity. And as always, the crown failed to honor its promise. Unfortunately, I did not stay til the end of the court battles cause I had to return home to Hawaii. What was the final outcome of our occupation of Waikaremoana? (
    msg for Tame and Irene)

  6. Nga mihi kia koutou Moana, Hone, Annette ratou ko MANA Movement…we certainly don’t have to continue to buy in to NZGovt overpaid apprentices like John Key and his ilk….and they have been misinforming the citizens of Aotearoa for too long so now they will have to accept the truth of their illegal actions which have been written into parliamentary law to make their actions legal. Those practices of mismanagement have helped to expose their greed and lack of cultural, social and economic responsibility for the people of this country. John Key only has the skills to manage his family of wife and 2 children….but has no understanding or competency in managing a country….and that includes the like apprentice politicians in his team. To all politician who lack life skills….go and live on a marae for one year and get a fast tracked education on the real world at your cost.
