Aotearoa Fisheries Limited joins forces with Massey University in the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement. .The agreement aims to identify opportunities for enhancement of the Maori fishing interests by undertaking research relevant to the Maori and New Zealand seafood sector, developing academic programmes to increase Maori capabilities within the sector and investigating the future of Maori fisheries structural and developmental options and strategies.
University Vice-Chancellor Steve Maharey, Aotearoa Fisheries Limited Chairman Whaimutu Dewes and CEO Jeremy Fleming signed the memorandum of understanding at the Manawat? campus on Monday.
An initial project arising from the Agreement will be the establishment of the Aotearoa Fisheries Limited Research Fellowship (Hao Moana) based at Massey and funded by Aotearoa Fisheries Limited.
Mr Fleming says Were extremely pleased to join Massey University on this journey. We know the fellowship will be a positive contribution to both the Maori and New Zealand seafood industry. This agreement initially came about from a need to formally document the settlement process, the Maori Fisheries Act and the subsequent formation of Aotearoa Fisheries Limited but has grown into what we know will be a strong collaboration of two organisations with the common goal of growing and protecting the seafood industry for Maori and New Zealand a like.
