Research report on disability issues experienced in Canterbury earthquakes

1 min read

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Social Development (Emergency Management & Business Continuity Group) on behalf of the National Welfare Coordination Group (NWCG) commissioned the Massey University Joint Centre for Disaster Research to identify issues experienced by the disabled community during the Canterbury earthquake series (2010-2011).

The research was supported by the Office of Disability Issues.

There are many lessons in particular the emergency services and welfare responders need to consider to improve how the needs of impairment groups are better met in the future. This report will help inform the development of best practices and guidelines currently being developed.

Thank you to all those that participated in the research, and to the research team at Massey University and GNS Science.
