Rotorua District Council has commenced work on the second stage of drainage improvements in the Koutu area, and specifically on Bennetts and Koutu roads.

RDC works manager Peter Dine said the work is necessary to improve drainage in what has historically been a poorly drained area, to replace aged infrastructure and eliminate open drains in the area.

The work is part of councils long term drainage improvement programme.

This project ties in well other council works being undertaken in the area, including completion of the Lake Road four-laning project and development of the youth space facility on
The Koutu area is low lying, relative to the lake level, and vulnerable to flooding from poor drainage. The works being undertaken will mitigate the flood risk to an acceptable level and improve drainage. It will also help drain the recently remodeled Karenga Park to provide a far more usable area than in the past.

Mr Dine said work will largely be in berm areas on roadsides, with disruption to traffic limited to road crossings. However motorists are being asked to take care when driving through the area and reduce speed.

The works are due to be completed in early 2014.
