Meka Whaitiri confirms that she will seek selection for the Labour Party candidacy for Ikaroa-Rawhiti.

Meka Whaitiri, Chief Executive Officer for Ngati Kahungunu confirmed today that she would be seeking selection for the Labour Party candidacy for the upcoming by-election in the Ikaroa-Rawhiti electorate.

The decision to seek selection has not been made lightly and I thank my whanau and all of those that have supported me to make this decision.
I have dedicated my life to one of service. I see this as the next step in my journey of giving to our whanau, hapu and iwi in Ikaroa-Rawhiti.

I was raised in a whanau of freezing workers and I began my working life in the Whakatu Freezing Works. I can see the struggle our people are engaged in on the day-to-day and I want to seek selection as the Ikaroa-Rawhiti candidate to continue the legacy of service that has been left in this electorate.

The Honourable Parekura Horomia has left big shoes to fill here, and in New Zealand politics more generally. Parekura was a man of the people, our voice in Parliament and a face well-known and loved on every marae, in every iwi, throughout the country.

I pay homage to him, as a friend, as a colleague, and mainly for the man that he was to so many of our people.
I cannot be Parekura, but I can promise that I will bring all of my skills, work-ethic and passion to serve the people of Ikaroa-Rawhiti.

There will be many high-caliber candidates seeking selection for the Labour Party nomination and I wish each prospective candidate, and their whanau, all the best.

The reason for seeking selection is simple really: our rangatahi need pathways to pursue, our people need jobs, warm homes, greater access to public health services and we need to be thinking strategically as we push into the post-settlement era. I have done the hard-yards on the ground, in the Public Service and with our iwi and now, I am ready, says Ms Whaitiri.
