Marae firestarter chased away

(Stuff.co.nz) Police want help identifying a man who was disturbed trying to light a fire at a marae in Ngaruawahia this weekend.

The man was discovered about 6am on Saturday trying to set fire to the Maori Wardens building belonging to the Trangawaewae Marae.

”The suspect was chased from the scene and the fire put out causing little damage,” a police spokesperson said.

He is Maori, about 25 years old, about 180cm tall with short black hair. He was wearing ”a greyish zip up hooded sweatshirt with a light coloured shirt underneath and long dark jeans”.

Police request anyone with information to call the Ngaruawahia or Huntly Police or to anonymously call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
