Northern Arena made a clean sweep of all the swim school and teacher awards at the New Zealand Swim Coaches and Teachers Association (NZSCTA) Conference held recently in Queenstown.

For the second consecutive year Northern Arena was the recipient of the prestigious Outstanding Swim School of the Year Award.

This is awarded to the swim school in New Zealand that demonstrates the greatest growth and retention of swimmers, and the highest standards of health and safety procedures, quality teaching, development of programmes and professional development of staff.

In addition to this, the exceptional expertise of the Northern Arena marketing team was recognised once again, with their third consecutive Swim School Marketing Award. The team consists of Justin Byrne, Marketing Manager, assisted by Kali Brydon.

Their outstanding work in 2012 with the Manuka Doctor sponsorship resulted in over 900 babies from the Rodney District and beyond receiving a school term of free swimming lessons.

Michael Weston received the Swim Teacher of the Year award, won in 2012 by Northern Arenas Head of Swimming and former Olympian, Dean Kent, while Rookie Swim Teacher of the Year went to Simon Leach.

Michael, the Assistant Swim School Manager, a popular and talented teacher, commenced teaching at Northern Arena shortly after the complex opened and progressed into a management position in 2012.

Similarly Simon started his swim school teaching when Northern Arena opened in 2011 and hence has achieved this award after only two and a half years of experience.

In recognition of over forty years of active involvement, Northern Arenas Director, Mark Saunders, was presented with a special award for Outstanding Service to the Swimming Industry.

A committed and enthusiastic swim teacher, Marks involvement spans competing at international and masters levels where he held Masters world records for 200m butterfly and 400 individual medley.

In addition he previously received the Master Swim Teacher award, he has coached, worked for Swimming New Zealand in the education department, was chairman of the Auckland Swimming Association, served on the NZSCTA Board and managed international teams at the World Championships, Commonwealth games and Olympics.
