Sealords Deal Architect Dies

Screen Shot 2013-07-16 at 11.34.53 PMTe Arawa and Tuwharetoa Marine Biologist Dr George Habib died yesterday from a suspected heart attack in Hamiltion. His contributions in the area of customary fisheries made huge inroads to securing and creating the Sealords Deal.

Dr Habib has helped uplift the input of Maori and other indigenous groups into the fishery and other areas of environmental concern.

His work has assisted iwi like Ngai Tahu, Nga Puhi, Waikato-Tainui and Tuwharetoa in the development of their fisheries today.

Dr Habib will be returning to Te Rangiita Marae Sunday.

  1. Thanks for nothing and for doing what the government and its appointed fisheries commissioners like Koro Dewes and Co whom we can see today while working in conjunction with the Japanese has produced very little of real benefit for the majority of Maori, while multi generational ancestral fishing rights have been lost to the commercials forever and a day. The government I have keenly observed over the last 50 years seems to have a knack of picking those who will forsake the interests of the many for the daubles of wealth and expedience of the future.
