Study into health disparities for young Maori women and their babies from a Kaupapa Maori Research paradigm

NPM_AlterNative_LogoThe reclamation of academic research by, with and for Maori is the focus of a study into inequalities in the countrys health system undertaken by seven Wellington-based health researchers; Beverley Lawton, Fiona Cram, Charrissa Makowharemahihi, Tina Ngata, Bridget Robson, Selina Brown and Warahi Campbell.

Their paper, entitled Developing a Kaupapa Maori research project to help reduce health disparities experienced by young Maori women and their babies, backgrounds the Maori reclamation of academic research and provides an overview of the health disparities experienced by young Maori mothers and their offspring.

The findings are in the latest issue ofAlterNative: An International Journal of Indigenous Peoples, published by Nga Pae o te Maramatanga, New Zealands Indigenous Centre of Research Excellence.

Associate Professor Lawton says Maori are a young population and maternal and child ill-health affects a significant proportion of our population.

The differences in infant mortality, respiratory hospitalizations and immunization rates between Maori and non-Maori are part of a larger picture of health inequalities in Aotearoa New Zealand and suggest that there is differential access to health services and health system factors contributing to inequalities.

Interventions to reduce these health disparities need to have a comprehensive understanding of the lives of these young women, including the challenges they face, their aspirations, and their support networks.

By looking at the plight of young Maori mothers and their babies, the study claims that the mothers suffer the dual stigma of being Maori and being teenagers, in addition to poorer health outcomes for them and their babies.

  1. Are they looking to make sure Maori Mothers are HOUSED to acre for their pepe/tamariki?? I DOUBT THAT!! If its crown university BS, the outcome will be MORE Maori Mothers targeted labelling in a negative way. MORE POISONOUS IMMUNISATIONS to support the crown drugging profits with their chemists, doctors & nurses as the modern day drug dealers to give drugs. Otherwise its more suspect research for crown ANTI MAORI purposes!

  3. The answer is very simple and well recognised Institutionalised Racism Apartheid endemic throughout the health system and getting worse now the pale crew from Cape Africa way are now in control of NZ health system. These young researchers should take note of what those who have been and are still engaged in the frontline against this colonist pale crews nigh on 200 year war of attrition against Maori to their overall detriment and realise these A-holes are not going to stop any time soon. Not only are we left in the dust from the cradle by whole avoidable and inadequate health stats but it is an acknowledged fact only 4% live long enough to reach 65 to qualify for a pension. We must also contend with the fact over 50% of elderly maori are not in their own homes and this will increase in the coming years. My advice to all young mothers and fathers is get out of NZ if and when able and find a better country to live in that your children may have a better chance at life than suffer under the oppressive apartheid system here. Remember also Maori, Trusts, IWI or Hapu based will and not help you and your family over time, they will and always fail to deliver. Its the Maori way. Remember also for all the billions in the so called Maori economy it is owned and controlled by less than 20,000 people who will not give an inch to assist the younger generation, not matter the spin doctor lies the tell you. Just look at all the negative stats for Maori to know the truth about such rantings and empty promises of so called IWI, Hapu Leaders and academics etc. Better to try you luck in another country where the playing field is level and not here where one is expected to climb and conquer a mountain from day one. Certainly not a formula for success in life when rapid climate change is added to the pile of obstacles one and one’s partner if any will need to overcome if one wants a decent life. You WON@T find it here in NZ with all these hard core racist running the show as per usual.
