The Department of Conservation has previously invited Poutama to impose a Rahui of at least one month after any 1080 poison drop as the Department believed that while not safe, after a month the risks would be minimal.
Poutama cannot accept the risk to either the Mauri of the land or the people. Both the Medical Officer of Health and DOC have acknowledged there is a risk to the health and wellbeing of Nga Hapu O Poutama if 1080 is applied onto customary food sources, and that the customary rights must be recognized and provided for.
Accordingly the Rahui has been imposed against any aerial application of 1080 poison in the Whitecliffs Conservation Area of the Poutama Block. The Rahui was placed in accordance with the Tikanga of Nga Hapu O Poutama and is effective immediately.
For the absence of doubt the Rahui applies to the Department of Conservation, its contractors and others.
