Around 100 members of Ngāti Kahu have occupied the Kaitaia Airport in what’s believed to be a protest against the signing of the $100m Te Hiku Settlement bill tomorrow.
The bill gives legislative effect to four deeds of settlement signed by Te Aupōuri, Te Rarawa, Ngāi Takoto and Ngāti Kuri.
Ngāti Kahu withdrew from the forum in 2011 and has yet to settle with the Crown.
Te Karere understands the land where the Kaitaia airport stands is a subject of their Treaty claim.
Today’s occupation is being described by its leaders, Wi and John Popata, as a repossession.
Police have since arrived at the scene and are speaking with airport staff.
Te Karere will have further updates as well as full coverage on our show, at 4pm, on TVOne.
