Should Might River Power Board members resign?

Mighty River Power board members are being asked to resign, putting a spoke in the works of the asset sales programme.

Local activists are asking for the support of high profile board members Parekawhia McClean and Tania Simpson.

Parekawhia McClean is chair of Tainui, and Tania Simpson is a Waitangi Tribunal member.

‘We think board members can put a spanner in the works of the sales by resigning their posts,’ says Alvina Edwards of Mighty River People’s Power. ‘They owe this much to the communities they are meant to represent’

Edwards is concerned about recent hikes to fees claimed by board members in excess of $200,000.

‘This is a bad look – fee hikes at a time of price hikes makes the position of board members untenable.’

‘As Maori, we would love McClean and Simpson to resign. This would support iwi efforts, such as Ngati Tuwharetoa who may be taking legal action against the sales. It would cause disruption in governance.’

Mighty River People’s Power will be asking Tainui for their support tonight at the PWC lecture theatre tonight (Business School, University of Waikato, Hillcrest Road, at 5.30).
