Associate Health Minister congratulates Dr Shane Reti on Harvard Honour

Associate Minister of Health Tariana Turia says that all New Zealanders can be proud that former Northland GP, Dr Shane Reti [(QSM) ; M.B.Ch.B., M.Med.Sci] has been promoted to Professor at the prestigious Division of Clinical Informatics,  an affiliate of Harvard Medical School in Boston.

The Division of Clinical Informatics was among the first academic divisions in the world to concentrate on the use of computers for patient care, teaching, and medical research hospital-wide.

“This is a fantastic honour for Shane and indeed for Maori health – that a very successful local GP and dermatologist could receive such acclaim for his distinguished research and leadership around health information technology”.

“We can all be very proud that Shane has been recognised in this way” said Mrs Turia

Dr Reti was a director of the Northland District Health Board for seven years and a recipient of the Queens Service Medal (QSM) for Public Service for his contribution to medical research, health, and Maori education.

Mrs Turia said “it makes for perfect timing as we travel to the 5th biennial conference of the international network of indigenous health knowledge and development in Brisbane, to acknowledge the impact of M?ori doctors in leading edge developments, both at home and now at Harvard”.

“I congratulate Shane, his wife Christine and their whanau for this fabulous honour.   I understand that Shane attributes much of his success at the number one university in the world, as being influenced by his ‘grounding’ as a M?ori doctor in Northland

“From Pataua to Harvard – Maori leadership in health is making inroads that all New Zealanders can be proud of”.
