Psalms of the Revolution: Chanz Mikaere

Chanz Mikaere

Of Te Arawa and Mataatua descent, Chanz has recently graduated with her Masters of Maori Vagina Art. Not one to do “light and fluffy”, her thesis topic was “Whare Tangata as a site for contesting colonial discourse”.

Chanz has been an active Tero-ist and advocate for Tinorangatiratanga and the political empowerment of women in contemporary society.

She writes poetry and political commentaries to complement her artistic creations.

Chanz terms herself a Kupu Sniper and in 2011 won Te Taonga a Tupu-A-Nuku: for recognition of excellence in Original Poetry Composition and contribution to the Fine Arts of Te Arawa. Chanz has performed her compositions at Waitangi (2011), Kua Tae Ki Te Wa: Celebrating Te Arawa Wahine (2011) and Voices from the River (2009).

The term Kupu Sniper is derived from the content and style of Chanz’s poetry: that her kupu “are a warning shot between the eyes”.

Since its inception, Nga Tai o Te Reinga has been instrumental in rallying Waiariki rohe responses to the Fiscal Envelope, the Foreshore and Seabed Act of 2004, the Takutaimoana Act and every piece of State sanctioned violence against Tangata Whenua.
