Maori Spectrum Hui to be held in Auckland

This hui follows an earlier hui in November 2009 at Kokiri Marae in Wellington on spectrum. This hui is to update participants on a new claim, Wai 2224, to the Waitangi Tribunal, lodged in December.

MaoriSpectrumCThis take concerns the Crown’s policy in relation to the ‘digital dividend’ as spectrum used by the old ‘analogue technology’ moves towards the ‘digital switch-off’, Maori Treaty rights in relation to the electromagnetic spectrum, and the current state of play in the unresolved Crown/Maori debate.

Acting on legal advice after the initial judical conference with the Tribunal at Christmas time,  claimants jointly agreed to:

  • ask the Waitangi Tribunal to vacate the current fixture and timetable of a February hearing
  • adjourn the urgency application to an indefinite date
  • ask the Tribunal to reserve leave for the claimants, with three working days’ notice to the Crown, to revive the urgency application

The claimants and the Crown intend to meet in early February 2010 to further develop an engagement work programme, and to seek to find a resolution to the Treaty claim. The claimants invite iwi and interested ropu to come and offer their views on the process and proposed negotiating position with the Crown, at this second national hui.

A further booklet will be prepared and made available at the hui.

The Maori organisations have no budget for this activity and it’s ‘pay our own way’ and ‘koha.’
