Eastern Bay of Plenty hip hop fans are set to get an international treat with Sydney based crew TheKumpnee ( confirming today that they are heading to Whakatane.

TheKumpneeThe talented four piece ensemble will perform as part of the Ko Ngati Awa Te Toki concert to be held at Wairaka Marae on the afternoon of Saturday 6 March. The concert is the finale to the launch of Ko Ngati Awa Te Toki which symbolises the iwi vision for 2050.

TheKumpnee will join a line up of Ngati Awa musicians, dancers and kapa haka performers in what promises to be an extravaganza of entertainment. More announcements will follow in the weeks leading up to the event including confirmation of one of New Zealands most promising Maori artists as the headliner.

To secure an international headliner for the event is a real coup for us. There is more to come is all I can say we are set to announce our New Zealand headline act next week says William Stewart, Communications Advisor for Ko Ngati Awa Te Toki.

Without giving away too much, you can expect to see some very well known talent at the Ko Ngati Awa Te Toki event.

Ronnie Lavender, a foundation member of TheKumpnee, affiliates to the Te Patuwai hapu of Ngati Awa and says that he cant wait to bring his music home to the iwi.

Weve played a few big gigs and festivals here in Australia but, for me, performing for a home crowd in Whakatane is up there with our biggest moments I find its always harder to perform in front of home crowds and people you know, because expectations are high. But in saying that, home crowds show the most love, so Im definitely looking forward to it.

Formed in 2006 by Lavender and fellow Kiwi ex-pat Josh Gage, TheKumpnee didnt take long to make a name for themselves in the highly competitive Australian hip-hop scene. In 2009, the duo were signed by Sydney based label Hurricane Global and have since then produced two video clips, That Girl and Grimy Pirate, which have featured on Australian music television channels Channel V, Rage and MTV.
