Stuff has reported that in just four weeks after its release the film Boy has overtaken Sione’s Wedding as the highest grossing New Zealand comedy of all time.

Boy has been at the top of the box office since its release on March 25 and has taken $4,090,114 in ticket sales.

The film, written, directed and starring Taika Waititi is a heartfelt coming-of-age story, set on the rural East Coast during the eighties.

Waititi said he was proud of the achievement.

The audiences are proving there are still great New Zealand stories to tell, stories that are unique, stories about us, by us.

“It is encouraging to know we find ourselves funny and can appreciate New Zealand comedy.” Waititi said.

Boy tells the tale of Boy, Rocky and their inept wannabe gangster father Alamein.
