Ngati Awa hold wananga for Scholarship Recipients

On Saturday 10th of April 2010 Te Paroa Marae hosted the successful applicants for the Ngati Awa Tertiary Grants and Scholarships. The day saw the largest gathering of students since the presentations began in 2007 with over 100 Ngati Awa students and whanau. The day was a celebration of academic achievement.

The day kicked off at Paroa Rugby & Sports Club who hosted the students for breakfast. This provided an opportunity for students to see the iwi vision for 2050, Ko Ngati Awa te Toki, (to view visit Students also had an opportunity to watch footage from the launch event, Ko Ngati Awa Te Toki 2010 2050 concert, where over 700 people gathered at Wairaka Marae on Saturday 5 March 2010.

Formal proceedings moved to Te Paroa Marae with the presentation of eight scholarships awarded in Matauranga Maori, Arts/Education/Philosophy, Medicine/Science, IT/Engineering/Technology and Applied Studies (six of which are available annually and awarded for a period of up to 2 years).

Whanau proudly watched as their sons and daughters, nieces and nephews and mokopuna were individually presented with a grant of assistance from Te Runanga o Ngati Awa.
