Ngati Kahungunu release their tobacco industry submission

Kahungunu Whanau/Hapu are invited to attend a Hui A Iwi to learn about the tobacco industry in Aotearoa and the consequences of tobacco use for Maori.

In September 2009 public submissions were called on the ‘Inquiry into the tobacco industry in Aotearoa and the consequences of tobacco use for Maori’.

The purpose of the inquiry is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the actions of the tobacco industry to promote tobacco use amongst Maori, and the impact of tobacco use on the health of the Maori population, and the wider economic, social, cultural and developmental impacts that arise from such health effects and tobacco use more generally.

A submission has been developed and approved and Kahungunu representatives will appear before the Maori Affairs select committee to speak to this submission at Parliament House in Wellington on Tuesday 11th May 2010.

Recommendation to emerge from Ngati Kahungunu’s submission are:

  • to reduce the supply of tobacco within Aotearoa
  • to look into eliminating tobacco from Aotearoa completely
  • that the tobacco industry be held accountable for the deaths and illnesses related to smoking
  • to increase health promotions which seek to assist Maori quit smoking
  • that the governement support Wai 844: Mate Pungarehu (funding for Minitiatives to eliminate or reduce smoking among Maori communities which was championed byour Kuia Nanny Bubbles (Te Arawa)
