Phoenix House of Makeup, the proudly Kiwi home-grown cosmetics company well known in local fashion circles, has announced the opening of the Phoenix School of Beauty, at its flagship store in Kingsland, Auckland.

A brainchild of Phoenix House of Makeups founder and director, Phoenix Renata (Ngati Porou, and Ngati Kahungungu) wasconceived as a way to plug the widening gaps in the market for modern makeup and beauty training which is relevant to todays beauty industry. The School aims to provide students with career options in the make-up industry from film and television to fashion, entertainment, beauty therapy and home-based beauty businesses.

Far too many makeup students come out of training in the beauty industry to have only learnt the very basics and are ill-educated on industry protocols. We will offer modern training that is importantly, relevant. Currently there are a lot of academies still running on a makeup curriculum built in the 1980s with inexperienced tutors and outdated course content. My aim is to introduce a fresh take on makeup, and teach skills that can be utilised in the industry.

Phoenix Beauty School is designed specifically to provide students with the correct skills, knowledge, and confidence to succeed as a make-up artist under the tutelage of professionals with current experience in the make-up industry.

Phoenix’s father is a well known Maori musician, Tama Renata (Herbs, Tama Band and guitarist from Once Were Warriors soundtrack).

The various courses at the Phoenix Beauty School will be geared towards people who want to learn any aspect of makeup artistry, for personal use to hairdressers who wish to learn makeup as a side-line, and also for people who wish to be freelance make-up artists.

My vision for the Phoenix Beauty School is to provide a training facility that has experienced make-up artists and a high calibre of graduates, said Phoenix. I hope that when our graduates find careers in the make-up industry, they will be proud to have trained with us and that their work will reflect that.

The schools first full-time course of 16 weeks runs from May 10th to 23rd August 2010 while the part-time course runs from 6th May to 24th June. Full-time students will graduate with a Phoenix Makeup Diploma while part-time course students will graduate with a Phoenix Makeup Certificate and can go on to complete the full diploma course.
