Iwi seek Council support

1 min read

Marlborough iwi Ngati Toa, Ngati Rarua and Rangitane have applied to the Marlborough District Council for a $1000 monthly grant towards maintenance and upkeep of their private Maori cemetery in Grovetown.

Tracey Williams, of Ngati Toa, said the iwi got nothing from the council to maintain the cemetery because it was on private land.

Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman said it was a private cemetery, which made it “a little different” to others in the region.

Councillor Jill Bunting asked why the iwi needed $1000 a month. Ms Williams said the money would be used for weedspray, mowing and rubbish removal.

Councillor Francis Maher said the council would look at the issue.
