Maori Cadetships Waitangi Tribunal Unit, Ministry of Justice

The Ministry of Justice has received funding from Te Puni Kokiri for the appointment of up to three Maori Cadets for a period of four months. The purpose of the funding is to support the maximum number of Maori into employment through cadetships targeted in areas where Maori are most likely to enter and remain in the workforce, including those where there is an increased demand for workers, an alignment with Maori interests and a demand for skills.

The Waitangi Tribunal Unit provides a comprehensive range of services to the Waitangi Tribunal, a permanent commission of inquiry that inquires into and reports on claims submitted by Maori under the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975. The cadetships will be placed in the Tribunals research team, which researches and analyses a wide range of historical and policy issues across all periods of New Zealand history and facilitates Tribunal enquiries that extend nationwide.

In this role you will assist research projects for Tribunal enquiries, the analysis of Treaty claims and the facilitation of Tribunal enquiries. Youll gain experience of working in an applied research team and of the diverse aspects of the Tribunals enquiries into Treaty claims. This is an opportunity to develop your research and analytical skills within a supportive team environment.

Youll be qualified to tertiary degree level, preferably in history, Maori studies, public policy, law or other relevant disciplines, or have some experience in historical or iwi/hapu research.

Youll be methodical and objective in your approach, have good writing and analytical skills, be able to use your initiative and take responsibility for completing assigned projects. Youll be an effective communicator and work well as part of a team.
