The Insider to appear before Maori Affairs Select Committee

2 min read

The man who blew the whistle on the US Tobacco Industry by publicly exposing the fact that cigarette companies were actively controlling and manipulating nicotine levels in cigarettes during the 1990s is set to appear before the Maori Affairs Select Committee this week.

This comes as a NZ Herald report has just revealled that New Zealand cigarettes have highest levels of tar and the 2nd highest levels of nicotine in our cigarettes. The results come from a tobacco industry study, which also found New Zealand smokers are exposed to the greatest average amount of tar out of 5703 smokers in eight countries.

Dr Wigand publicly exposed the secret goings-on within the tobacco industry on America’s 60 Minutes programme in 1996 and his story was portrayed in the 1999 movie The Insider which featured Russell Crowe, Al Pacino and Cliff Curtis. Dr Wigand is now visiting New Zealand to deliver expert advice to the Maori Affairs Select Committee on its inquiry into the tobacco industry and the consequences of tobacco use for Maori.

This is an amazing opportunity for New Zealanders to hear-first hand about the tactics Dr Wigand believes the tobacco industry uses and to explore whether those things happen here. It will be especially interesting to hear his views on whether New Zealand tobacco companies are targeting Maori populations,” said Maori Party co-leader, Tariana Turia.

Dr Wigand will be speaking at the Maori Affairs Select Committee on 23 June.
