The public is being urged to Zumba in an effort to support cancer patients and their whanau (family) with the disease. Nationwide Zumba classes for everyone are taking place throughout the North Island this Saturday 10 July in a bid to raise money for local community cancer support groups in the various locations.

Initially the funds raised were to assist Maori TV celebrity Te Hamua Nikora with his cancer, however fortunately he has since been gifted the operation required and is currently recovering well after receiving treatment last week.

The idea for New Zealands first ever nationwide Zumba fundraiser came about after a group of Maori women Zumba instructors wanted to do their part to help Nikora. Zumba is a dance fitness program created by dancer Alberto Perez in Colombia during the 1990s. It combines Latin and international music with dance in an effort to make exercises fun.

“We wanted to give recognition to Te Hamua who is a role model and leading example for our Maori men, says Rotorua Zumba Instructor Leanne White-Haverkamp. Zumba allows us to uplift people, help with self esteem, weight reduction and has many more health benefits says Leanne.

The Zumba fundraising classes will take place in Auckland, Hamilton, Rotorua, Gisborne with the aim being is to raise up to $10,000. A Zumba event is also taking place in Perth Australia on July 16th where the funds will support local whanau living there with cancer.
