Mataatua Iwi Challenge – Open Pig Hunting Competition

Mataatua Iwi Challenge aims to engage nga uri o Mataatua and invited iwi, young and old to participate together in a fun, healthy active and positive manner. A range of up to 12 different sports and activities are being offered.

Activities will include Outdoor Bowls, Golf, Basketball, Touch, Waka Ama, Line Dancing , Pig Hunting, Table Tennis, Jump Jam, Kaumatua Hakinakina (Tabloid Games)

Other sports to be confirmed include:

Open Pig Hunting competition

This year’s Mataatua Iwi Challenge Open Pig Hunting competition will be held this weekend from Friday 17th Sunday 19th September 2010. WEIGH IN: 10AM 1PM SUNDAY 19TH @ TATAIAHAPE MARAE (Matahi Valley Road, Waimana)


  1. Single entry ONE HUNTER PER ENTRY. Entry fee is $25.00.
  2. Entry to junior opossum competition is free.
  3. This event/competition does not give any competitor any right to hunt on private or managed lands.
  4. BOARS ONLY No Sows or Barrows; Maximum 2 Boars Per entry
  5. Pigs under 30kg WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
  6. The competition runs between 12.00am Friday 17th September 2010 to 1.00pm Sunday 19th September 2010. ALL pigs & possums must be caught during these times.
  7. ALL carcases must be presented whole, CLEAN GUTTED with NUT or NUTS IN.
  8. Pigs of equal weight: In the event of a tie, the first weighed in is the winner.
  9. Tusks will be measured undrawn: In the event of a tie, the first weighed in is winner.
  10. No domestic, frozen pigs, possums. The scrutineers reserve the right to reject any suspect pig or possum.
  11. Pigs to remain on display until 2.00 pm.
  12. Entries along with cash or cheque entry fee must be in the hands of the hunt organisers by mail clearance at 3pm on Wednesday 15th September 2010.
  13. All pigs must be in the hands of scrutineers at Tataiahape Marae, Matahi Valley Road, Waimana, no later than 1.00pm Sunday 19th September 2010.
  14. All participants enter at their own risk. The organisers of the Mataatua Iwi Challenge, all sponsors and Tataiahape Marae shall NOT be responsible or liable for any injuries or misadventures that may occur during this competition.
  15. Any pigs entered must be presented by the entrant only.
  16. All entrants must be present to collect all prizes.
  17. To claim some prizes you may be required to present a current firearms licence.
  18. The judges decisions are final.

  • 1st: Heaviest Boar Surtees - Aluminium Dog Box to value the of $700.00 / plus cash
  • 2nd: Heaviest Boar Total Back Solutions – Cash prize
  • 3rd: Heaviest Boar Frontier Helicopters – Scenic flight for 2
  • Average Weight Hunting & Fishing – 30/30 rifle
  • Best Tusk Central Helicopters – Hunting trip for 2 to Manganuku Hut

NB: Plus 2nd & 3rd prizes for Average Weight & Best Tusk Sections
