Intellectual Property and the Safeguarding of Traditional Cultures | Publication

1 min read

The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) has recently published an important document Intellectual Property and the Safeguarding of Traditional Cultures: Legal Issues and Practical Options for Museums, Libraries and Archives.

The authors see “the publication as a living document that could over time be augmented by additional case studies and experiences. To this end, we plan oncreating a web version which could be commented on/improved, so the wider it is disseminated and discussed, thebetter.”

The publication, prepared under the aegis of the Creative Heritage Project by two external consultants, Ms. Molly Torsen and Dr. Jane Anderson, offers legal information and compiles practical experiences on the management of intellectual property for cultural institutions whose collections comprise traditional cultural expressions. It seeks to respond directly to the needs of cultural institutions and indigenous and traditional communities dealing with the preservation, safeguarding and protection of cultural heritage.

WIPO has asked for all interested extended networks to help advertise and promote it. If you know of any newsletters or blogs which may be interested in disseminating information about it, please let us know. If you know other people who would be interested in the publication, do not hesitate to direct them to it.
