Te Matatini announces kapa haka schedule

Te Matatini Society Incorporated, the national organisation for Maori performing arts excellence is pleased to announce the three day draw for the next international Kapa Haka Festival to be held in Gisborne in 2011.

Starting with the Powhiri on Wednesday 16th of February at 1.30pm at Wai o Hika Estate, near Gisborne the official competition will start on Wednesday 16 February.

The draw, done in front of fifty people and broadcast live on Maori Television introduced the format for the competition to be held over four days. 42 teams from around the country and Australia will compete for the coveted title of the best Kapa Haka team in the World. Judges have the difficult task of selecting three teams from the first three days in the lead up to the finals day on Sunday 20th February. Winners will be announced at the end of Sunday.

Wai o Hika Estate is a natural ampthitheatre and ideal location for families to watch the best kapa haka in the world, says Darrin Apanui, Executive Director of Te Matatini.

An event atracting authentic world-class Maori performances from around the country and Australia, the region will be hosting over 2000 performers and up to 20,000 spectators over four days from 17 20 February 2011.
