Pem Bird, President of the Maori Party, is pleased with the excellent progress achieved at their first National Council hui of the year.
“Now that an election date is firmly planted in our calendars we have been able to focus on the vital task of laying the foundations for a dynamic campaign” said Mr Bird.
“The Council is strong of heart and their commitment is undeniable. We were able to focus on our key approach to the 2011 campaign while also having opportunity for robust debate around the progress of the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Bill.
“It would appear from recent events that the Maori Party has come of age – and must be prepared to face the scrutiny of members as we address challenges, and identify areas of growth. This hui gave me as President, every confidence that the party is in good shape to strengthen our unique political edge as the strong and independent voice of Maori”.
“Kua hu te wai” – the water is ready.
