(NZ Herald) A large aftershock has just hit Christchurch.

According to Geonet, the quake struck at 7.34pm. It was a 4.8 magnitude aftershock at a depth of 11km and was centred within 5km of Lyttelton.

Herald reporter Isaac Davison was in a restaurant when the quake struck, and said it went on for about 10 seconds.

“A few people were holding each other. The lights were swinging pretty heavily.”

This aftershock has hit at a time when many family and friends from outside the area are visiting to provide support for whanau hit by the destructive 6.3 quake that hit over a week ago.

Twitter was abuzz with talk about it and even Civil Defense sought to clarify by tweeting “PLEASE don’t speculate abt damage after an #eqnz aftershock. Confirmed damage reports will be tweeted by @NZcivildefence and @CEQgovtnz“.

“House picked up again and felt like it dropped grrrrrrrrrrrrr not a nice night to be standing out in the rain with 4 kids stop stop stop” tweeted Karen Brown, while Cheryl Bernstein said: “Oh, that was a big one. A really big one. A growling rumble that built and built until the whole house was shuddering and banging.”

Madmacnz tweeted: “Big jolt then hell of a twisting of our house – very violent very quickly.”
