Whanau all over the world stand to remember those lost #eqnz

2 min read

Yesterday, much of AotearoaNew Zealand came to a halt at 12.51pm to observe a week to the minute that the earthquake hit. Here in Rotorua over 100 people came to City Focus to stand quietly, some weeping, some praying, all filled with sadness.

We have read reports from around the country of 1000s taking the time to stop, reflect, pray, cry.

Flags flew at half-mast across the country and prime minister John Key asked the nation’s 4.5 million people to join in a show of unity for people ‘enduring tragedy beyond what most of us can imagine’.

At one of Christchurch’s busiest junctions, traffic halted in the shadow of the Knox Church and the historic Carlton Hotel, both ruined in the quake.

Those who stood and remembered where not just in Aotearoa, we have heard that people throughout the US, the UK, Canada joined in solidarity.

Some pictures just say it all. This is Hohepa Panapa standing in solidarity, humility, sorrow, and gratitude at 12:51 pm in the snow today in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. If you too joined us – click on this link at let us know.

Police say they have pulled 154 bodies from the wreckage and the number of others missing and feared dead indicated a final death toll higher than previously thought.

‘The figure … of around 240 is solidifying,’ Superintendent Dave Cliff said.

  1. To all the people that lost their lives and to the whanau and friends of all concerned we send our condolences to you all.

Im in Bundaberg, Qld, Aust and at the designated time yesterday, i was at Sugarlands shopping center in Bundaberg and the whole shopping center just came to a stand still in rememberance of the victims of this terrible castastrophe. May they all R.I.P.
