The race is on By-election for Te Tai Tokerau announced

2 min read

It’s been confirmed that there will be a by-election in Te Tai Tokerau. We’ve been told that Independent MP Hone Harawira has told the speaker that he will be resigning in due course.

Although a date for the by-election has not been set, the election needs to be called within 6 weeks of his official resignation date.

The Labour Party has announced that MP Kelvin Davis will stand, while the Maori Party too has announced that they will be standing a candidate too, although no name has been provided. The National Party has said they will not stand a candidate and we’re unsure of the Greens.

In a press release Mr Harawira said,

Today I wrote to the Speaker of the House, Lockwood Smith, formally notifying him that I will be resigning from Parliament, effective 20 May 2011, said MANA leader and MP for Te Tai Tokerau, Hone Harawira. The date for any possible by-election is in his hands.

I am comfortable with my decision to put the future of the Tai Tokerau in the hands of the people, and I welcome the challenge of others seeking the mandate of the north.

I hope the campaign will be fought on the record of the candidates, and the policies of the parties. The people of Tai Tokerau deserve the opportunity of a clear campaign, devoid of all the nasty innuendo of the past few weeks.

I am forever grateful for all the support I have received over the past 5 years, and I look forward to going back onto the streets of Tai Tokerau, to discuss the issues, to reaffirm that support, and to seek guidance as to how best to build for the future.
