Destiny Church candidate forced to stand down

1 min read

(Waatea News) A prominent Maori Women’s Welfare League member says Destiny Church members are welcome to join … but they can’t impose their religious beliefs on other members.

Pru Kapua says her Waiatarau branch has challenged the right of Destiny co-founder Hannah Tamaki to stand for the league presidency.

She says it has also questioned the legitimacy of three new Auckland-based branches which self-identify as league branches.

They are first and foremost Destiny branches, branches of the hahi. That compromises the non-sectarian requirement in terms of the league. The league welcomes people from all denominations. The question of what happens when you are identified with a sect or a political party is the same issue, Ms Kapua says.

The league is taking legal advice about the dispute as is Destiny.
