New categories have been introduced in the Westpac Manawatu Business Awards for 2011.

Sponsored by UCOL, a new award for Maori business achievements will celebrate Maori success in the region.

It is the first of its kind in Palmerston North.

“This award covers all areas of Maori business success, whether it is hospitality, design, engineering, computer technology, beauty, sport and exercise, or any other areas,” UCOL director for Maori issues Te Atawhai Mataira said.

“We know that once people have completed a qualification they need continued support to succeed in business.”

The new award reflected UCOL’s commitment to boost study success rates for Maori, UCOL chief executive Paul McElroy said.

“No matter what they study … a high number of our students will end up either in business or owning businesses. Celebrating business success shows them what can be achieved what their hard work can turn into.”

Meanwhile, Palmerston North City Council introduced a sustainable business award to recognise a company leading the way in reducing environmental impacts. The integrity and ethics award is sponsored by Rotary.

Settlement Support is backing an award to a business that recruits, supports and works to retain a significant number of skilled, high-value migrant staff.

Nominations for the 2011 Westpac Manawatu Business Awards opened last night at a launch evening hosted by 2010 supreme award winner WMC Technology and Westpac.
