Whaimutu Dewes put on Housing NZ Board (Waatea News)

1 min read

New Housing New Zealand board member Whaimutu Dewes says good housing is critical to health and education.

The Ngati Porou lawyer says there are now more options for Maori housing than in the 1980s, when he worked for the department of Maori Affairs which had a mortgage lending programme.

He says he’s keen that there be more affordable housing for those who need it most.

It’s pretty critical, which is why I accepted the appointment, that we get adequate housing to people who otherwise cant afford it. If we dont do that well just keep going down the spiral of bad housing, bad health, bad education and unfulfilled development, Mr Dewes says.

He intends to use his new but experienced eye to\ identify where needs are highest.
