Unemployment rates for Maori and Pacific Islanders in New Zealand are double those of the rest of the population.

The national jobless figure sits at 6.6 per cent – but for Maori it has risen from 13.7 per cent to just over 15 per cent.

For Pacific Islanders, the rate stands at 13.8 per cent.

The New Zealand Council of Trade Unions has set up a committee to help improve conditions for Pacific Islanders.

The committee’s speaker, Natalie Faitala, says many people are having a hard time.

“It is a national statistic, and so Pacific peoples – while there are Pacific people climbing the ladder and doing well – the majority of Pacific peoples are are the bottom and struggling to make ends meet.”
