Labour looks to the Maori vote as a key priority

1 min read

(Waatea News) Labour leadership candidate David Shearer says winning Maori support back for Labour will be one of his top priorities if successful.

The Mount Albert MP goes up against the experienced New Lynn MP David Cunliffe for the top job.

He says he will be listening closely to Labour’s Maori caucus, which with the election washout is down to Parekura Horomia, Nanaia Mahuta, Shane Jones, Louisa Wall and Rino Tirikatene.

The Maori vote for Labour was up so people I think are coming back and I think we cant ignore that but also we have to recognise where our support comes from. It does come from a lot of the Maori voters out there and we should remember that, certainly in these black times, Mr Shearer says.

He will also be holding out his hand to the Mana and Maori parties.
