Ngati Rangi receives death threats after Ohakune 1000 cancelled

2 min read

Redneck New Zealand is alive and well. TangataWhenua.com joyously reported a few days ago that Ngati Rangi had successfully gotten the Ohakune Giant 1000 Hill Climb called off due to their event organiser being unwilling to alter the route. Sadly as a result the iwi has been subject to a hate campaign that has seen their iwi offices vandalized, the head of a rotting deer left on their doorstep and death threats made agains the manager. Racist comments have also been posted on a thread relating to the race on Ski FM’s website.

MP and Maori Party co-leader has hit back at the bullies saying if they have a problem they should take it up with the Ruapehu District Council, who had granted the permit without following due process.

These disgusting actions towards Ngati Rangi, and iwi members must stop” said Tariana Turia, MP for Te Tai Hauauru, “This is abuse. It upsets me that these incidences have occurred, and I am disappointed that members of the community would allow these cowardly violations to occur.”

Mrs Turia went on to say the following: “If people are disappointed that the motor race did not go ahead, then they need to be prepared to act in a mature way, and take that issue up with the Ruapehu District Council, who granted consent to hold the race without following due process, which includes iwi consultation.”

Turia said “Ngati Rangi, as tangata whenua, have a special relationship to Ruapehu maunga, and the mountain road which formed part of the course, contained sacred sites, or waahi tapu.”

“I have spoken to iwi members, and it is clear that the iwi had no issue with the race itself, just the use of one road. If due process had been followed, then this matter could have been easily cleared up.”

“I understand that many people may be disappointed that the race was cancelled, but to abuse whanau, and iwi is a disgrace. I am very concerned that in this day and age, we have people who put a car race ahead of the safety of the members of their community” said Turia

“The real issue here is the lack of consultation with iwi, and also the Ruapehu District Council’s lack of regard for their own advisory groups, which advised the Council of the issues related to the maunga.”

I commend Ngati Rangi for their strength and courage to uphold their duty of guardianship over the maunga. I am also proud that they are able to put the actions of a few to the side, and continue to maintain an open door, ready to welcome in anyone who would like to discuss this issue” said Turia

  1. I just read the news!!! a bit late!!! i know what its like to be the subject of abuse, and i get angry, feel down, when people are so fully of negativity. I have been there where these immature ninconpoops are, and hopefully i don’t fall down in the toilet again,

  2. I love how i get call redneck but ive done nothing wrong i work for microsoft as a security programer and i read the news but thats all i run my own bizz and have few companys now to all the guys that leave bad comments need know this..
Know me before ya judge me……

  3. Article talks about racist comments on the ski fm site, yet there are plenty made here, people could think you are no better than those “pakeha racists”. Eating pakeha? Pakeha have no souls? this is the type of stuff that brings things so low, you should delete the comments or moderate them, only if you want to claim the moral high ground, which it appears you are grappling for.
The road is a road, it is truly nothing more than that despite whatever is loosely believed.
Areas need to be one of two things, usable or not, it’s simple that way, consulting each time is nonsense and serves no purpose other than pocket lining.
If consistency is applied there will be harmony, being fickle and changeable is not constructive and simply unsettles people.
I do hope a comment not agreeing with everything you say isn’t labeled racist. That seems to be the trend unfortunately, disagree with Moari and you are racist or culturally insensitive. Everyone has culture, few If any are similar and none are truly valid to someone who doesn’t share them.

We need to be mindful of our reactions to, what is a minority of society who got too much mainstream media coverage. Remember, that they don’t represent the wider community as much as they would like to think they are. I was at the picnic on Saturday and there were about 40 of us and about 10-12 of them in a town of 1200. Clearly the majority, the other 1140 odd may have had an opinion, may have been indifferent but did not feel the need to make a public statement about their opinion.

Therefore, by abusing the minority, we end up tarring everyone else unfairly with the same brush. If race relations in this country are to improve, both sides, yes us and them need to strive to disagree respectfully, without getting personal about ethnicity or slating invdividuals online or in the media. There are motor sport fans, both maori and non-maori. There are people who love and value koro, our maunga, who are both maori and non-maori. This should not be an issue about colour – it is about our individual and collective behaviour when challenged with a provoking issue. So people lets take our behaviour to a higher level where we can disagree without casting stones.

  5. I really don’t know what this is about. It seems that the organizer refused to compromise because the local iwi were asking him to. There’s been heaps of such incidents. Such organizations try to assert their assumed rights to go where they want and do what they want. They don’t recognize iwi consultation. What’s a road doing going through a tapu place anyway? Is the road part of the wahi tapu or are these sacred areas on either side of the road? Is anyone allowed to use that road or is it tapu? Is it tapu sometimes and not at other times? Some clarity might help.

    1. THAT ROAD RUNS THRU WAHITAPU LAND AND ITS ACTUALLY THE RUAPEHU DISTRICT COUNSELLS ???? UP THEY DIDNT SPEAK TO THE IWI.

  6. How would the community react..I wonder…if I a crazy bunch of people organized a bike race through their beautifully manicured cemetery…without consultation with the powers that be….just a thought…!!Yeah..! weak comparison but its the only one I have right now…LOL..!!…!!I bet the whole community will be up in arms, both Maori and Pakeha…Go figure..!!..BUT when it is our ancestral sacred Place…and we speak up…!!the nasties happen…!!Racism is alive and well in NZ…It rears its ugly head when we speak out against injustices,….Praise God for those who dare to challenge the status quo..and to make a stand for what is just and fair and fight the good fight…What goes round will come round and we can sit back and say..”We tried to warn you but you wouldn’t listen”…Today we reap the consequence of bad decisions made…It has gotta get really bad before it gets any better…How bad is “really bad” only time will tell.

  7. I AM A NGATI TUWHARETOA DESCENDANT AND I BELIEVE THAT NAGTI RANGI HAVE BEEN THE TARGET OF UNLAWFUL MISCONDUCT AND ABUSIVE BEHAVIOUR FROM THE EVENT HOLDERS AND SUPPORTERS OF THE OHAKUNE 1000 MOUNTAIN CLIMB. YOU WHO ARE INVOLVED IN THIS RACE AND INVOLVED IN THIS MALLICIOUS ACT DONT DESERVE TO BE ON OUR ROADS, GOD SAVE ANYONE WHO HOLDS YOU UP IN A TRAFFIC JAM ESPECIALLY MAORI BUT THEN GOD SAVE YOU FOR RATTLING THE CHAINS OF RACISM TRYING TO LOCK UP NGATI RANGI AND HOLD THEM CAPTIVE TO YOUR DEMISE….THEY ARE MY PEOPLE MAKING OUR MAUNGA SAFE SOUND AND SERENE, AND IF THE RUAPEHU DISTRICT COUNSELL DONT KNOW HOW TO OWN THIS MESS THAT HAS BEEN THE FOCUS OF THIS EVENT THEN THEY DONT DESERVE TO BE THERE AND IM SURE THEIR CODE OF ETHICS DONT INCLUDE HIDING BEHIND THE IWI….LACK OF COMMUNICATIONS WITH IWI AND ALLOWING IWI TO HAVE THEIR SAY….BUT I FEEL THAT WAS DELIBERATE AS BIG MONEY HAS GONE INTO THE RACE BUT THE R.D.C NOW THIS AND ITS ABOUT MONEY RATHER THAN THE MAUNGA AND ITS PEOPLE…I COULD BE WRONG BUT I DOUBT IT. AND TO YOU WHO ARE DOING THESE VILE THINGS AND MAKING THREATS TO OUR IWI YOU DONT STAND A SHIT SHOW, ITS THE WOMEN THERE THAT WILL TAKE TO YOU WITH THE TAIAHA OUR MEN WILL EAT YOU…..DEFENDERS OF THE WHENUA….KIA KAHA NGATI RANGI……KIA KAHA….

    Hau Hau Hau

    1. Pakeha have no souls? Nice work…take something that has nothing to do with race and make it a racial issue. You egg! I totally disagree with what people are doing with the threats but what I also disagree with is it then turning into a hate issue where people make such comments as you have against “pakeha”…..be angry with the people who are doing this, don’t generalize and make such hateful comments about “pakeha” as a whole. Looks to me like the council is at fault with this. Race organizers followed the process and sought permission but it was the council who did not follow due process. Now it’s sad that some dicks out there are doing such hideous things to the tangata whenua but that is the act of a few, ignorant and immature people…..but still no excuse for you to make such comments against “pakeha” as a general statement.

  9. This behaviour is becoming more and more typical! Children at Kinder don’t even behave this way..These BOGANS have no respect for anything or anyone..they wouldn’t dare show their faces, or god help them..ONCE WERE WARRIORS wouldn’t even compare..Front up you gutless arseholes..see how tough you are then???pfffft!

  10. This just goes to show how far apart our 2 cultures are, and really, no one should be surprised. We are 2 completely different people, with different understandings of both spiritual and physical connections to each other and the land. Aroha atu ki nga tauiwi… its not their fault they are kuware!

  11. im sorry this has happened being a motorsport fan but i am not familar with the event is there an alternate to going over tapu land if so why wasnt it discussed as per iwi understanding those accountable should be the ones getting it in the neck not the iwi
    KIA KAHA
