1 min read

Mabel June Hinekahukura Mariu from Te Whanau A Apanui was made a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queens Birthday Honours list, for services to Maori and the community.

Shes a past president of the Maori Womens Welfare League, a former Silver Ferns captain, and a major force in the West Auckland Maori community.

Dame June celebrated her 80th birthday on Friday with a packed event at Rutherford College, where she taught for many years.

She says the new title was an overwhelming honour that she accepted not just for herself but for the many people she has worked with over the years.
